John M. Streicher, PhD
John Streicher, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson, as well as a member of the Comprehensive Center for Pain & Addiction. For more than 12 years, he has been developing his research program as an independent academic, centered on the molecular signals that control pain relief of opioids and cannabinoids as well as the signals that control their side effects. By understanding these molecular circuits, Dr. Streicher aims to develop new pain drugs without the addictive, psychoactive, and other limiting side effects of cannabinoids and opioids.
Dr. Streicher earned his Bachelor of Sciences in Biology from George Fox University, his Master of Science in Neuroendocrinology from Oregon Health and Science University, and his doctorate from the University of California - Los Angeles. He worked with Dr. Laura Bohn of The Scripps Research Institute from 2009 to 2012 for his postdoctoral fellowship, where he studied opioid signaling and drug discovery. He synthesized these threads of training into his current research program, which he started with his first faculty position at the University of New England. He joined the faculty at the University of Arizona in 2015.
