Zhanette Coffee, PhD

Postdoctoral Research Associate, College of Nursing

Zhanette Coffee, PhD, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, CARN-AP, is a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Arizona College of Nursing. As a dual-certified family nurse practitioner and certified addictions registered nurse advanced practice, she brings expertise in addiction, chronic pain, mental health and integrative health approaches.

Dr. Coffee is deeply committed to advancing whole-person, evidence-based care for pain and addiction populations. Her research focuses on advancing addiction and pain science by developing innovative, whole-person care approaches that address the needs of both patients and providers. Through scalable, multilevel solutions, she aims to improve clinical workflows, enhance provider support and optimize patient outcomes. With over a decade of experience, Dr. Coffee has served in diverse roles, including addiction and pain practitioner supervisor in detox, residential, and outpatient settings, as well as clinical researcher, nursing faculty, public health nurse, and police officer. Her interdisciplinary background enhances her ability to address complex health care challenges.

She is a recipient of numerous honors, including the Laurence B. Emmons Dissertation Award in 2023 and the Jonas Scholar recognition from 2021 to 2023. She is actively involved in organizations such as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the International Nurses Society on Addictions and the American Society of Addiction Medicine, Arizona Chapter. She also serves as secretary of the Jonas Scholar Alumni Council.  

Dr. Coffee earned her doctorate in nursing from the University of Arizona in 2023, and master's and bachelor's degrees in nursing from Azusa Pacific University in 2019 and 2016, respectively. In 2011, she graduated from California State University, Fresno, with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology.
