Mohab Ibrahim, MD, PhD
Mohab Ibrahim, MD, PhD, is a tenured professor of anesthesiology with joint appointments in pharmacology and Nnurosurgery. He is the director of the Chronic Pain Clinic and the Pain Fellowship at Banner – University Medical Center and the medical director of the Comprehensive Center for Pain & Addiction. Dr. Ibrahim is also a pain physician at the Southern Arizona Veteran Affairs Health Care System.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Ibrahim has an active research laboratory addressing missing gaps in our knowledge about chronic pain with several emphases, including photobiomodulation. His research interest includes understanding the biology of pain and neurodegenerative disease and finding novel methods to control it with a trajectory aimed at translating animal research into clinical treatments. He is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense and the Veteran Affairs Administration.
Dr. Ibrahim earned his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with a minor in mathematics while participating in the Undergraduate Biology Research Program at the University of Arizona. He remained at the U of A to earn his master’s degree and a doctorate in pharmacology and toxicology focusing on neuropathic pain. After completing graduate school, he joined the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson and graduated with a medical doctorate in 2008. He joined the U of A College of Medicine – Tucson's Department of Surgery for his internship. Dr. Ibrahim continued his training in Boston, where he joined the Brigham and Women’s Hospital for his residency in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine. He earned his chronic pain management fellowship from the anesthesiology department at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He returned to the University of Arizona in 2014.
