Randa Kutob, MD, MPH
Randa M. Kutob, MD, MPH, is a board-certified family medicine physician, a diplomat of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, and an associate professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson. Over her distinguished career, she has combined clinical care, medical education, and research to promote chronic disease prevention, weight wellness, and integrated mental health recovery.
Dr. Kutob’s clinical practice and research focus on helping patients make lasting lifestyle changes to prevent and treat chronic illnesses. Backed by more than 20 years of primary care experience, she dedicates her work to addressing obesity, diabetes, and related health conditions:
- Clinical Weight Loss: She co-founded the Banner Clinical Weight Loss Program, which has helped patients achieve healthy weight goals since 2010.
- Preventative Research: Dr. Kutob conducts research on effective group office visits for diabetes care, diabetes prevention, and childhood obesity. Her work has received funding from prominent institutions, including the National Institutes of Health.
As an expert in medical education, Dr. Kutob has shaped how future physicians are trained at undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education levels.
- Continuing Medical Education: She serves as the director of Continuing Medical Education (CME) for the U of A College of Medicine – Tucson, a role she assumed in 2016 after serving as interim director. In this capacity, she collaborates with local and national faculty to design online courses and study their educational impact.
- Student Mentorship: She serves as a faculty mentor for medical students through the college’s longitudinal Societies program and the Doctor and Patient Course.
- Leadership Roles: Dr. Kutob previously served as the director of the Family Medicine Clerkship and as chair of the college's Curriculum Committee (now known as the Educational Policy Committee).
Dr. Kutob is a strong advocate for integrative health models that treat both physical and mental well-being as connected pieces of recovery. She directs the UArizona Recovery thru Integration, Support & Empowerment (RISE) unit within the Department of Family and Community Medicine.
The RISE unit supports the community through two main initiatives:
- Workforce Development Program: This program specializes in training Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialists—individuals who use their lived experience with recovery to help others.
- RISE Health and Wellness Center: This center provides direct support to improve the physical, emotional, and overall wellness of individuals living with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, or other behavioral health challenges.
